Herrera Does Not Expect Any World Cup Magic from Carlos Osorio

Former Mexico national team coach Miguel Herrera believes that the national team will not be able to do significantly better under the regime of his replacement Juan Carlos Osorio.

Appointed as the head coach of the Mexican national team in October 2015,Osorio has overseen an inconsistent period when it comes to results. Mexico have failed to make it beyond the last 16 stage of any World Cup tournament in the past. Their only appearance beyond this stage of the competition came before 1994. Under the leadership ofHerrera, Mexico experienced a lot of problems in the dressing room and it was a reason behind their early departure from the World Cup 2014.

Osorio recently has managed to put together a string of good results, but Mexico have largely been disappointing in the high-profile games. Even though the national team went through a strong run at the Copa America, they suffered an embarrassing 7-0 defeat at the hands of eventual champions Chile. Still, the magnitude of defeat caused a lot of issues and many called for Osorio to be sacked. The Colombian, though, has managed to pull the team together and they have dropped only two points in the World Cup qualification so far. Still,Herrera does not expect any major improvements at the World Cup under this regime.

"He can qualify us [to the World Cup], but I don't think it will be any different because in a World Cup the opponents are much stronger. I don't see any arguments [to believe otherwise] in the national team's play, even though the human talent is there. We will go to the World Cup, but we won't see anything different. I say it because it's what I see.I left for other reasons. Errors off the pitch meant I couldn't continue,” said Herrera.
