Mexico Not in a Rush to Take Decision on Osorio’s Future

Mexican football Federation has revealed that they are no rush when it comes to taking a decision on the future of Juan Carlos Osorio. The Mexican coach has been widely linked with managerial jobs with other national teams after performing reasonably well with Mexico in recent campaigns. The 57-year-old took charge of Mexico back in 2015 after having previously been involved only in club football. He has been in charge of teams like São Paulo and the New York Red Bulls in the past. However, his biggest success has come with Mexico after averaging more than two points per game.

Mexico, though, were unable to make a major impact at the World Cup and were knocked out at the round of 16 by Brazil. This was yet another disappointing round of 16 exit for the central American team. However, the achievements ofOsorio have not gone unnoticed with several nations interested in bringing the 57-year-old as their new manager. There are reports that United States have been able to enter into a precontract agreement with the manager while Argentina are also reported to be keeping tabs on the situation. Colombia could enter into the race to signOsorio if Jose Pekerman leaves his position after a disappointing World Cup.

However, sporting directorGerardo Torrado revealed that Mexico are not we will have to see what he wants for the next stage “Now that Yon [de Luisa] comes in, we will have to see what he wants for the next stage. First of all, an extensive evaluation of everything will be carried out. Then, calmly, a wise decision will be taken. There is no rush, you have to be very balanced and evaluate properly what has happened and then take a decision,” saidTorrado after a World Cup that was highlighted by Mexico’s win over Germany.

Hector Herrera Urges Mexico To Shed Small-Side Mentality

Porto midfielder Hector Herrera has urged Mexico to shed their small-side mentality ahead of this summer’s World Cup finals in Russia. El Tri have been ousted in the round of 16 in each of their previous six editions of the global tournament but Herrera has urged the nation to push for a quarter-final spot this time around.

Speaking to Spanish outlet Marca, he said: “We have to stop these fears, stop believing we’re a small team, stop going on about ‘the fifth game’, believing that we won’t reach the fifth match. We have to think about becoming champions, in wanting to lift the World Cup. I think if we reach the next round, it is proof that we are up for big things and can cause that surprise and impose the feeling that we are a great side at the World Cup.”

Herrera has been one of Porto’s leading performers ahead of the World Cup and he has managed 63 caps for the nation since making his debut in 2012. Despite this, he is not taking anything for granted and the midfielder remains anxious over whether he would be picked by Juan Carlos Osorio for the upcoming tournament.

Mexico have been one of the regulars at the World Cup and they will be appearing for the 16th time at the global competition this summer. Only Brazil (21), Germany (19), Italy (18) and Argentina (17) have managed to feature in more editions than the El Tri. Regardless of this, they cannot expect an easier route to the playoffs after being pitted against Germany, Sweden, and South Korea in their group.

The North American nation begin their World Cup campaign against reigning champions Germany on June 17 and a defeat in that game would surely see them playing catch-up to make the knockout stage. Sweden and South Korea have improved on their team strength in recent years and the former most-recently shook the footballing world by ousting Italy in the World Cup playoff.

Rafa Marquez Hopeful Of Representing Mexico At 2018 World Cup

Veteran midfielder Rafa Marquez has not given up on the possibility of representing Mexico as this summer’s World Cup. The 39-year-old has not featured for the national side since the 2017 Confederations Cup, but he remains hopeful of making the 23-man squad due to be picked by Juan Carlos Osorio next month.

Speaking at a news conference, Marquez said that he has not given up on the prospect of representing El Tri at the global tournament in Russia, he said:  “I still have the same dream as always, hope dies at the end, so I’m still hoping, continuing to work with the same desire I’ve had to be there.”

Meanwhile, there has been talk of Marquez taking up an adviser role with the national side at the World Cup, but the midfielder suggested that he has yet to hold talks with either Osorio or the Mexican Football Federation regarding the option, he added: “I’ll always be available to support the national team no matter the position or the way. Obviously we haven’t spoken about that topic yet, they haven’t proposed anything to me and you have to wait for the time that might be necessary to know if it’s going to happen.”

The former Barcelona man has not been considered by El Tri ever since the U.S. Department of Treasury regarded him as a frontman for a drug kingpin in August. The midfielder managed to fight the designation – which is not a criminal charge – to make his comeback with Atlas, but injuries have since hampered his chances of earning regular game time.

Regardless of Marquez’s involvement, Mexico will be eyeing a strong result in the World Cup this time around, having failed to progress beyond the round of 16 stage in any of the previous six editions. The South American nation nearly reached the quarter-final stage four years ago in Brazil, but two goals from the Netherlands in the final six minutes ensured that the Dutch sealed a stunning 2-1 comeback win.

The Confederations Cup acts as the precursor to a World Cup tournament. Many teams from across the world – including the hosts of the World Cup – take part in the tournament. Traditionally, winners of the Confederations Cup have not been victorious in the World Cup itself. Mexico are not one of the teams expected to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, at least reaching the quarter-finals will be a major achievement for Osorio’s team.

Osorio is aware of the quality of teams that will come to the World Cup 2018 in Russia. Further, Mexico are expected to face a lot of acclimatisation issues due to the much older climate in Russia. Mexico appeared to have a distinct advantage over teams at the World Cup 2014 largely because of the similar conditions that prevailed in their own country. Even though the Mexican national team comprises of foreign-based players like Javier Hernandez, many of the names are comfortable playing in temperate climates. Mexico will be facing teams like Chile, Germany, Australia and Russia amongst others.

Osorio says that the competition provides a good way to judge the progress Mexico have made under his regime.“The 2017 Confederations Cup will help to become familiar with the World Cup venues and it is also a good opportunity to face Russia, the host of both tournaments, and good teams as Germany, Chile, Australia, among others. The Confederations Cup is a high-level tournament and a great training for our goal of playing at the next World Cup,” said Osorio. “We are happy for playing the tournament with the best teams and to consolidate our national team, knowing that we need to get a ticket for World Cup,” said Mexican Football Federation (FMF) president Decio de Maria.
